“You have a story to tell the world.” A common sentence you hear from successful people. Why? Because every success came from a story. You won’t be at the top of the mountain without struggling while climbing it. You won’t go at the top of the stairs without taking the first step.
So what’s my story? Good thing you asked. But before I tell you about it, let me just say what this is not about. This is not a love story. So don’t expect romance. This is not a soap opera. So don’t expect drama. This is a simple story of a single mom, who found a way to get out of a corporate job, start a business of her own to spend more time with family and do things that are more important to her than the typical office-home lifestyle. Still interested? Good. Let’s proceed.
It all started when I was still in my regular office job. I have been working in the corporate world for 10 years, but I did not have a direction. I was going from one position to another, hoping that I will find my true joy and success. But I failed. The only reason that I keep going is because I cannot afford to lose a job. Being a single mom, I just can’t.

Getting Kicked Out Woke Me Up
My wake-up call came when I was about to get fired for the second time. You read it right – second time. My first was when the company I worked for suffered from a fire. It was a manufacturing company, and the only area that did not burn was the warehouse. Thank God for that. Thank God also that nobody got hurt. But many of us lost our jobs. Although we were given the right remuneration, finding a replacement was a challenge.
My second experience happened when I was working in an outsourcing company. The company’s nature was laying off employees when accounts or projects were rare. Obviously, the reason that I was fired was due to redundancy. I didn’t know that it was like that until I worked for more than a year. Because I became aware that the job is not stable, I realized that maybe working in a corporate world is not for me.
Good thing that I’m a subscriber to a spiritual mentor. In one his emails, he sent a message about the option of working from home as a virtual assistant. At that time, I have no idea what virtual assistant is, but the term “working from home” are the words that made me interested in the content. Since the day I read about it, it didn’t leave my mind. Let me tell you the reasons why.
Since I started my corporate days, I’ve been travelling for at least four hours back and forth from home to office. And it’s been a struggle, especially when the weather is not good. There were times when I have to conquer a flood and fight for transportation just so I can go home. Imagine how stressed I was when I travel, not to mention the stress you usually get when working in an office.
Another challenge in having a corporate job is the inability to be there for your family when they need you. I have to ask permission so I can attend to this or go to that. There were times that the management won’t even allow me to leave my work. It’s just sad and disappointing.
Enough Is Enough
I finally said to myself that this kind of typical life is enough. Maybe I am not meant to be in the corporate world. In the first place, I don’t see myself growing old as an employee. It’s just too average. Being mediocre is not enough. I have to do something. I went back to that email about working from home and I attended its live seminar.
It opened my eyes to many possibilities. But it was just the start. There were challenges that came my way. It was not easy. But I believe that if I want to succeed, I must not give up. I must keep pushing no matter what. After the seminar, we had an assignment. One of which is to create blogs that will help me develop and expose myself to the virtual world. And the journey of becoming a virtual assistant begins.
And the story continues …
