Top 5 Questions You Have to Ask Yourself Before Starting Your Online Business
Working from home or doing business online seems like an easy thing to do. Do not be deceived. If you think that it’s just transferring your work from the office to your home, think again. I am not telling you this to scare you. I am telling you the truth, because that’s what I thought, too, at first. And I thought wrong.
There are many questions to ask yourself first before starting your own online business. Let’s discuss the first five, because they are the most important question that you need to address immediately. They are the following:
1. Am I Ready To Work For Myself?
I know that at first, you would definitely say “yes!” to this question. Who wouldn’t, right? But then, if you are already in the situation, things will be different. You will find yourself wondering and confused because you do not know where to begin. Working for yourself means owning your business. You do not depend on others to market your business. Everything starts with you.
If you’re used to benefits such as vacation or sick leaves, prepare to let all these go. Because you do not work for others anymore, remember? You are now responsible for everything about you, health insurance included. But hey, do you really need these vacation when you can do your business anywhere?
2. Do I Get Bored?
This question should be answered by those people who get bored easily when at home. In my case, I don’t. I love that I am able to do many things now that I manage my own time. I don’t get bored because of the many things that I want to learn and want to do every hour of the day. Believe me, if you get used to this, you won’t even have enough time to do all the things you can think of.
3. Do I Have the Discipline to Manage Myself?
Yes, you have to ask this question because the first person that will bother and make you lose focus is yourself. Having the freedom of time is sometimes so tempting that you tend to do anything in an instant. Make sure that if you do something online, focus on it. Set time when you browse your social media accounts such as Facebook or Twitter. Going to social media sites without valid reason only wastes your time more than you think.
4. Am I Always Willing to Learn?
Doing business online is not a one-time thing. What I mean is that when you learn how to do business online, you never stop from the first thing you’ve gained. You always have to innovate and make sure that you update yourself with the latest tools, apps or software that will make your business better. Having an open mind to learn something new from time to time is definitely a requisite. So you have to ask yourself if you are okay with it. You must enjoy learning because if you don’t, learning will be a heavy thing for you.
5. Will I Be Able to Focus Working from Home?
When you’re at home or anywhere you choose to work, there are a lot of distractions present around. In my experience, working from home is a challenge because there are distractions. Not all distractions are bad though. In my case, distractions are paying attention to others. For example, I need to go entertain a friend who suddenly visited me. Or I need to go to a business office to pay for a bill or take care of something. Or my daughter suddenly invited me to watch a movie with her or that my aging parents need my attention to do something.
I am not telling you that spending time with loved ones are bad. They are great, actually. It is one of the reasons why I love working from home. But prepare to get distracted. Because most of the time, people around you will not understand that you also need time alone to work on your project or talk to your clients online.
There are more questions that you need to ask yourself before deciding whether to build your business online or not. But for me, the questions above are the most important. Yes, it will be a challenge. But think of the benefits after overcoming the obstacles. If you gave yourself time to answer all these questions, you’ll be glad that you did. It is always better to prepare.
